NYE 2010

This New Years I was actually quite tired.  I was in the mood for a big to-do, but lack of energy really killed things.  However, with some help from my number one stylist/friend I think I pulled off a fantastic look for the would be crazy night.

Dress was a tad short and backless with chic draping.  Pairing it with cute heart dotted sheer tights took the pressure off the hem line.  Also, anything can be classed-up with a little help from our friends pearls! Left the hair straight with fairly natural make-up (and a touch of glitter-it's NYE people, it's allowed!).

My Love...s

My first pair of designer shoes were Dolce and Gabbana! I found them with my best friend and sister at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver during their HUGE summer sale. I should have bought two!

I Know What Boys Like...

Actually, I have no clue! I do know what I like and honestly, that's the only thing that matters. Like I said in my very first post, I dress for me and no one else. This isn't to say that I don't put in a little extra effort if I'm meeting that cute boy for coffee, or I have a super important interview. But, it's important to note, that I'm still not dressing for them. I am presenting myself the way I would like to see myself in the mirror. This gives me confidence, and thus I am able to introduce the best me to the person sitting on the other side of the table.

Ultimately, this confidence leads to my happiness, and well, I think that's the bottom line right there, don't you?

Having said all this, I normally put a fair amount of thought into what I wear everyday, well most days. I do have those go-to pieces that I can easily grab on my lazy days. Just pondering on what I want to wear tomorrow makes me excited to get up in the morning (late morning). Although, sometimes I do think about it too much and this might cause slight sleep deprivation from time to time. This often happens when I'm in the mood to try something completely new and I know it has the chance to fail. I need to make sure every element of the outfit works together-the top, bottom, shoes, bag, hairstyle, make-up and outerwear (the coat's gotta flow with the bag, or the whole thing is a disaster!) It's all worth it though when you put it on, take a look in the mirror and say "how we lookin'? SO good!" (for you S. and S.).

Mission for the Week: Don't be afraid to really dive into your wardrobe and mix things up, it's not gonna kill you (unless you make a HUGE mistake in which case I take NO responsibility-I will probably make fun of you though. But, if we're smart and we want to grow into our own style we will take those disasters and make a masterpiece. WARNING: this is not for the faint of heart, if you seriously fuck up it's NOT My Problem and please don't share your advice with others. Love you!

So go forth, venture into that mess of a closet (don't fall in, and when you do, come out looking more fabulous than ever!)

In conclusion, I think boys like you, and if you like you then you're doing great! (that was a tad confusing...)

Le Grand Chapeau

Today it was raining, it's January on Vancouver Island, I'm not sure why I expected something different.
Anyways, I decided to wear my big wool hat, my long leather gloves and my wool capelette (sp?).

Wow, the myriad of reactions I got from people about the hat! I couldn't believe it! (well I could, it's Nanaimo).

Girl from work said "WOW! You look really good! Are you trying to hide your hair? Or did you just want to wear a hat?" Compliment killed.

Boss at work "Aviva? I didn't recognize you!" As if I put a hat on and wow, new Face!

Cafeteria woman on campus: "That's a good idea instead of an umbrella. We only have so many hands!" Practical comment I guess.

I actually got a normal compliment from a complete stranger at the bus stop who just politely said "Very pretty hat." Thanks!

Save the BEST for last. Most awkward and ridiculously funny comment from guy in theater building: "That hat is scary! I mean, it's big, and black...I mean, it's nice, but it's intimidating...You're just gonna keep shaking your head at me aren't you?...ok, well...ya..." Biting my lip!

Well, I think people should wear hats more often. They are NOT scary. The right hat on the right person brightens up the ensemble. Sure it brings a sense of mystery, but don't we all want to be a little aloof sometimes? It's not always just something to be worn on bad hair days, all though it has it's advantages.

People, mission for next week: Wear a hat one day! Don't have one? Buy one! Love it! Wear it! Pick your fav color and make sure it looks damn good! You've gotta have the right state of mind to wear a hat! You've gotta OWN IT! Don't let the hat wear you!

Bonne Chance!

Recent designer purchases

I love my Prada sunglasses. They are so comfortable and pink and black! My fav colors. They go with everything! I wish I could wear them all year round, note to self-MOVE!

Shopoholic? Me?

It started with a rainy day in Feb '07. I was in Victoria. I'd just arrived via greyhound bus from home town Nanaimo. Going back to school. Pretty depressed. When I'm depressed the one thing that is always guaranteed to turn my mood around is of course, shopping!
Lucky for me Victoria has a scattering of pretty decent clothing destinations. And even more lucky the one shop that sells high end designer fashion like Michael Kors, Lacoste and others happens to be located right around the corner from the bus depot where I was that day. (K well closer to The Empress Hotel, but for this story we'll say it's closer).
I wondered in to the tiny boutique packed full of delicious designer goods, suitcase in hand, back-pack strapped on-not so classy I know). The lovely, bubbly shopgirl greeted me with a surprisingly cheerful and non-judgmental smile (considering the suitcase and back-pack fandango).
"We're having a great sale today, half off all Michael Kors coats".

Words my wallet didn't really need to hear, but my heart thumped faster!

I spotted them straight away. I large rack of lavish, gorgeous coats just waiting to be petted. So I did! They were all so soft, so many colors to choose from. They all looked at me with expectant eyes..."Try me! Feel me!" I felt obligated (it was SO difficult-not) to try a few on. First the classic camel, then the red, skipped the brown, and then my love-Black. I picked a long, velvety coat. It fit just right, hugged my hips and shoulders. C'est magnifique!

The shopgirl wrapped it up in tissue paper very carefully (as if it was gonna stay in the paper for more than an hour until I got back home, ha!). I plopped down some plastic (debit unfortunately, Visa is so much classier) and walked out the door. It probably took walking half way to the bus stop before the rational part of my brain kicked in and the crack in the air inside the store wore off when I started processing the practicality of my purchase, both for my wardrobe and bank account.
Well classic peice so duh! Yes to wardrobe, and bank account? What bank account? I'm pretty sure it's close to empty now anyway. But I'm still happy so whatever!

Birthday Suit

Glitz and Glam is the only way to go on one's birthday!

La Première Post

I love fashion: clothes, shoes, bags, make-up. Always have. When I was younger I used to change outfits probably like 3 times a day, more if I could get away with it. The Katy Perry song that goes "You change your mind/like a girl changes clothes"-I think I inspired those lyrics! Ha!
I was one of those girls who loved to wear fancy dresses and then run around outside in the mud! I think the mud added a certain je ne sais quoi.
I have always had my own style. It's become better with age, I hope. I remember fondly my grade 1 school photo in which I paired black leggings with a black and hot pink long sleeved horizontal striped dress. I was SO mad when leggings came back into fashion because I was convinced I started that trend! Oh, 6 year old Aviva such I big ego!

Anyway, I always seem to get nice (for the most part) comments about what I wear. I tend to put a fair bit of effort into my everyday look (most days) so it's nice people notice.

So I thought I'd make a blog, A) Because a certain blogger queen keeps telling me I should and B) so I can catalog all (à mon avis) my great fashion triumphs. Comment if you'd like. I'm sure there are some that are not so great. But with every mistake truly comes inspiration for the next attempt.

I dress for me and no one else. Do the same and you'll be happy!
